Tarleton's Reading Hub
The ‘Reading Hub’ is a quiet and comfortable space for students to come along at lunchtime and get lost in the world of books. It is supervised by our team of English teachers as well as our Literacy leaders who support in keeping the Reading Hub tidy and are always on hand to help students to find books which meet their interests.
At Tarleton Academy, reading is at the heart of all we do and all teachers are invited to deliver subject seminars in the library during key events linked to their subject. As well as this, we host various events in our ‘Reading Hub’ throughout the year to promote reading and there are lots of rewards (such as our hot chocolate loyalty cards!) to help motivate and encourage students to challenge themselves with reading.
As soon as students begin school in year seven, they are invited to visit the Reading Hub once a week within their English lessons and are encouraged to exchange their books, earning plus points as they progress through their reading journey. Students are also provided with a reading log to ensure that they regularly engage in reading for pleasure at home and to enable parents to be fully immersed in their reading enjoyment and progress.
As well as this, we have also invested in an innovative literacy improvement tool called Bedrock Vocabulary. It is an online platform that helps children to learn very important academic vocabulary, whilst encouraging them to read regularly. As your child progresses through the Bedrock curriculum, they will study hundreds of words, whilst reading fiction and non-fiction texts regularly. They will also fill in an online vocabulary notebook to practise using this vocabulary, and you can see and edit this yourself to support them with reading at home.
We are enjoying settling in to our new state of the art library and we can’t wait to expand our book collection for our students and allow our culture of reading to continue to flourish.
