The English Department offers a range of extra-curricular activities which serve to enrich our students’ knowledge and understanding of our cultural capital as well as support their learning.

‘Creative Writing Club’ takes place during one lunch time a week and provides an opportunity for students to further develop their skills and imagination, crafting their own stories and poems with a particular theme each week.  Students have been successful in competitions such as Young Writers and even had their work published.  Please take a look at our English Celebration page on our website to see some of their excellent work showcased.

‘Book Club’ is aimed at our KS3 students as an opportunity to explore teen fiction beyond the classroom.  At present, we are fortunate enough to partake in two national competitions, ‘The Big Book Quiz’ and ‘Lancashire Book of the year’.  Students are preparing for this through reading and discussing the selected novels each week in our Reading Hub as well as engaging with them at home.

As well as this, Film Club is a chance for students to enjoy films from a range of cultures and genres, inspired by literature or historical events promoting some real thought-provoking discussions amongst students.  We are excited to also introduce ‘Comic Club’ which charts the development of comics right from the beginning to modern day and is open to all KS3 students.

For year 11, Mr Curtis offers ‘English Lectures’ on a Thursday lunchtime; challenging the minds of our students by exploring higher-level concepts and ideas in their GCSE literature set texts.

We actively encourage and promote local and national writing competitions within the department. We also invite local writers and theatre groups to the school to enhance our students’ learning experiences. This year we are looking to organise visits to see ‘An Inspector Calls’ and ‘A Christmas Carol’ for our year 10 and 11 students.
