The Local Academy Council (LAC) is deeply committed to the success of the school and dedicated to ensuring that every student receives the highest quality education, along with the opportunities and experiences necessary to reach their full potential. Our Councillors play a crucial role in overseeing the school's operations, serving as "critical friends" to school leaders, and holding the school accountable for its performance and continuous development.

The LAC has an important role in acting as the eyes and ears for the Trust Board providing important community oversight at a local level of the school’s performance, vision and ethos. As a local academy councillor, you will not be involved with the day-to-day running of the school. Councillors normally attend meetings in the evening, read and comment on reports and visit the schools termly to see first-hand the impact of their work.

Hear from one of our Local Academy Councillors on his motivations for joining and insights into the position below...

Mr Wayne Marland -  Local Academy Councillior

" I applied to become a Councillor at Tarleton Academy in 2023.  My association with the former Tarleton High School had begun in the 1980s where I became a Governor, and for a brief time, Chairman. I resigned that position when I became an Education Adviser and Inspector with Lancashire Education Authority. I did, however, continue to follow closely the school’s progress and both my daughters attended the school in the 1990s.

After retiring from a lifetime of work in education, I did not envisage any further involvement with the governance of schools. I was, however, intrigued  by the changes taking place nationally and locally in the leadership and management of schools, and in pedagogy and the use of IT in teaching and learning. I wanted to understand how Trusts worked. In particular I wanted to support the new senior leadership of the Endeavour Learning Trust and Tarleton Academy. I was also excited by the possibilities of the splendid, new buildings to further develop a quality curriculum and enhance provision for students and the wider community. I must also disclose a personal reason for wanting the Academy to offer the very best provision; one of my granddaughters is a current student!

Training and support for new Councillors is exemplary and I have felt welcomed and supported. I enjoy meeting Councillors from other Trust Academies at our training events and the opportunity to meet students and staff in both formal and informal settings. The documentation to support Councillors in analysing the Academy’s strengths and areas for improvement is impressive and I am pleased to be  involved in Tarleton Academy’s drive to improve community engagement."
